vertical pub blockbusters
description by si - early 2007
VPB will always be a classic as the first really 'different' dicegame to hit the pubs after the success of the A-Z. The idea was dreamt up by Si after a scandalously unfair defeat in the Punchbowls Blockbusters pub quiz. Si, JW and Jig were 13 pints of Black Sheep to the good (or so they thought) only to find out that it had to be a horizontal winning line. Since when?
Christnie Ev fine tuned the rules, and it was all systems go over a gruelling 4 or 5 week period before the first ever win was achieved in the Varsity, which took some shine off proceedings. The game made a brief revival in the spring of 2006 and is definately due a run out soon.

The main weakness is the likelihood of going to a poor quality pub (i.e. if you land on an 'I' you must go to Independent). Si has since bent the rules to allow people a 'free pub choice' on certain letters but is this in the spirit of the game? We'll see. STOP PRESS..... (if it was 2007 and the press was running) with York Pub Champions League in limbo, F'd Up finished, Play Your Dice Right and VPB are going to be the two games which take us through to summer's A-Z. Si is currently working on a version of Eggheads with a football players name theme instead of the usual tricky general knowledge questions used in the show. VPB could well return this week as board 2 and 3 has been rediscovered. |
2010 revival
whether it did return in 2007 I don't know as I was out of the country, in summer 2010 it did come back though as a game to break up the a-z and the later
rounds of the jig cup. the rules were the same as before, although the board had one less column due to a lack of pubs starting with certain letters. one addition to the game was the goldrun, a bonus game as a reward for the person who got blockbusters (the original prize for this was supposed to be a chunky kitkat)
