pub champions league
description
Described by some (OK, me) as "elitist nonsense" and "against the spirit of dice games", the Champions League aims to pit the best pubs in York against one another to determine the best of the best. In 2007 and 2008 the cream of the alehouses of the day faced off, with Blue Bell winning a two-legged final against the Swan by a narrow 10-9 margin.
In 2016, the Champions League was revived, but rather than being chosen, the pubs had to earn their places through the Big 100 competition, resulting in Blue Bell failing to qualify to defend its title and other usual favourites such as The Swan, Slip Inn, Golden Ball and Brigantes also missing out.
qualifiers from 2015-16 big 100
On each night of the Big 100, a pub of the night was determined, some of the nights had co-pub of the night with 30 in total being eligible for Champions League entry. The Lord Collingwood in Upper Poppleton was left out as it's too far out of town to easily work into a night out, leaving 29 pubs to fill 28 spots, these were...
Artful Dodger, City Screen, Cross Keys, Eagle & Child, Exhibition, Falcon Tap, Fox, Gillygate, Golden Fleece, Golden Lion, Golden Slipper, Guy Fawkes, Lighthorseman, Maltings, Micklegate at 127, Old Ebor, Pavement Vaults, Pivni, Phoenix, Sea Horse Hotel, Sutlers, Three Cranes, Victoria Vaults,
Waggon & Horses, Walmgate Ale House, White Horse, Ye Olde Starre Inne, York Tap, Yorkshire Terrier
To reduce the 29 pubs to the 28 needed for the group stage, four of the co-winners (Eagle & Child, Golden Fleece, Golden Lion and Lighthorseman) had a play-off with the best three going through. Golden Lion was comfortably the worst on the night and was eliminated, leaving the others to move on to the group stage.
group stage
The 28 pubs are divided into seven groups of four. Each pub faces each other once, with both fixtures from each group taking place over a single night with one drink in each. The top two from each group go through to the last-16 knockout stage, with the two best 3rd-placed teams also making it through. During the knockout stages only one fixture takes place per night with two drinks in each pub.
