formula 1 pub dicegame
When a variety of new dicegames were being tried in mid-2005, Si suggested that we should have an F1 game. Trying to incorporate Formula 1 into a dicegame to select which pub to go to was pretty difficult, and the idea was forgotten as many other great games came about
While I was in Australia in early 2007, I had a brainwave while picking which corner I wanted to sit at for the Australian Grand Prix. It means everyone gets to roll the dice and it literally becomes a race
Each person on the night out rolls the dice to select which team they represent, and in turn each driver represents a pub. The gameboard is a formula one circuit, with each corner being numbered. Everyone then rolls the dice and whoever gets to the end of a lap first gets to go to their pub
Due to the high quality of drivers in F1 (and Jenson Button), all of the pubs are pretty good, so it can't really go wrong as far as selecting a pub goes, it's just intended to be a bit of fun
the full rules (based on the 2007 F1 season)
It took me two years, but I finally came up with an F1 dicegame. It is basically a race and everyone gets to roll the dice a lot.
Before we get to the race, it's qualifying time. There are 22 cars in the 2007 World Championship, spread across 11 teams. Each player must roll the dice to determine which team they are racing for...
1 McLaren, 2 Renault, 3 Ferrari, 4 Honda, 5 BMW, 6 Toyota, (Red Bull, Williams, Toro Rosso, Spyker, Super Aguri)
The first person rolls a dice and gets whichever team they rolled, so if someone rolls 3, they are Ferrari. The next team in the constructors takes over that number, so if the next person also rolled 3, they would get Red Bull (and so on)
Once all the players have rolled for a team, the rolling order for the race is determined by who has the best team, so if you have McLaren you're first, if you've got Super Aguri, you're last
The game board that you play on is a Formula One circuit, each corner is numbered and you need to complete the lap to select a pub (this will take multiple rolls, so everyone has a chance)
Each team has two drivers in F1, so in this game each team has 2 pubs. Whichever player completes a lap first, you go to their number 1 pub (the one with the lowest number). The winning player uses the same pub for the following lap, and if they lead again, you stay in the same pub. If a player leads one lap, but not the next one, they change to use their 2nd pub.
example
Here's a fictional example using Albert Park (as it's the first race of the season (and 15 minutes from where I lived at the time))
Albert Park has 17 turns, so you need 18 to complete a lap.
This example used the most normal 5 people on a night out at the time, but you could play with up to 11 players
pub allocation

team selection
John rolls 2 and is Renault, Jig rolls 6 and is Toyota, Sarah rolls 4 and is Honda, Lucy rolls 1 and is McLaren, Si rolls 4 and is Torro Rosso
this example uses one dice, but takes a long time, 2 dice would probably be too quick, an 8 or 10 sided dice would be better
Lu would roll first as she has the best team (numberwise at least, they should be behind Renault and Ferrari really).
lap 1
Lu rolls 5. John rolls 1, Sarah rolls 2, Jig rolls 2, and Si rolls 6 - after starting at the back of the grid Liuzzi is in the lead!
Lu rolls 5, John rolls 6, Sarah rolls 3, Jig rolls 4, Si rolls 2 - This would put Lu at turn 10, Si at 8, John at 7, Jig at 6, Sarah at 5
Lu rolls 2, John rolls 6, Sarah rolls 3, Jig rolls 6, Si rolls 4 - John reaches turn 13, with Si, Lu and Jig all at 12
Lu rolls 5, John rolls 4, Sarah rolls 6, Jig rolls 1, Si rolls 2 - Lu and John only need 1 to complete the lap, Si and Sarah have 14, Jig has 13
Lu rolls 1, but it's enough for Alonso to lead lap 1, and means a trip to the Ackhorne.
Rolling resumes with John at the next pub
go to Ackhorne, drink beer, eat pub snacks etc. Then before moving on, rolling resumes, it's John's turn as Lu had already had her turn for this round and is at turn 1
lap 2
John rolls 5, Sarah rolls 5, Jig rolls 6, Si rolls 1 - John is at turn 5, Sarah is at 2, Jig is at 2, Lu is at 1, Si still hasn't finished lap 1
Lu rolls 4, John rolls 3, Sarah rolls 6, Jig rolls 4, Si rolls 6 - Sarah and John are at 8, Jig is at 6, Lu is at 5, Si is at 4
Lu rolls 5, John rolls 5, Sarah rolls 6, Jig rolls 3, Si rolls 4 - Sarah is up to 14, John is at 13, Lu is at 10, Jig is at 9, Si is at 8
Lu rolls 6, John rolls 4, Sarah rolls 4... Jenson Button wins! Yeah, get in there!!! as James Allen would say. Sarah ends lap 2 first meaning a trip to the Tap & Spile
walking, drinking etc, then as 3 people had already gone, Jig and Si need to finish off the rolling for the last turn
lap 3
Jig rolls 6, Si rolls 6 - Sarah is at turn 1 on lap 3, John is at turn 17, Lu is at 16, Jig is at 15, Si is at 14
Lu (now racing for the Hussar) rolls 4, John rolls 3, Sarah rolls 4, Jig rolls 6, Si rolls 5 - Sarah is at turn 5, Jig is at 4, John, Si and Lu are at 2
Lu rolls 6, John rolls 5, Sarah rolls 3, Jig rolls 6, Si rolls 3 - Jig is up to 10, Lu and Sarah are at 8, John is at 7, Si is at 5
Lu rolls, John rolls, Sarah rolls, Jig rolls, Si rolls... you get the idea anyway, keep doing laps and going to the leading pubs, there's more overtaking than in real F1
extra rules
Anyone who needs the loo must say they're going for a pitstop and misses their next roll
Anyone who joins the race late goes last in the rolling order whatever team they get, and has to start 5 corners behind the current last placed person
si's reaction to the game
Like Pubopoly, i was very impressed with the concept for this game. My only concerns were the amount of rolling that would take place - it seemed it could go on and on and it might dominate conversation. I def want to try it but maybe only when you return as i need to be 100% on the rules and regulations. I like dicegames that 'go somewhere' so it does score highly.
We did this once around Christmas 2007 as part of a dicegame marathon.
